Media Commentary Investment Strategy Private seminars Public speaking Japan has been a sleeping giant for almost three decades, a wonderful place to visit, but an awful place to invest. Awakening in 2023, and likely becoming be the top investment location in Asia, it raises many questions such as ‘do I get out of China?’, ‘how do I proxy invest in Asia?’, or simply ‘what do I buy?’. During my long tenure in the finance industry, I have relied on a ‘boots on the ground’ research strategy which has served me well and often results in a contrarian view and debates that range from Japan’s national debt levels not meaning it is the ‘Greece of the East’, to what is long-term innovation versus short-term fads in the market. Objectives
Understanding of the uniqueness and the patents of Japan's economics is a challenge for investors today, with many of the skillsets lost through multiple financial crises, or attractive emerging markets in Asia dominating investor attention, there are few market professionals today who have having witnessed Japan investment from bubble, to bust, to the current recovery.
One model doesn’t fit all. Japan economy is often misunderstood by the western world. Understand how Japan economy works, then you understand the differences, and you find it extremely interesting in the context of investing in Japan. At the end of the day, Japanese are wealthy, ingenious and dynamic. The most popular views emerging are the themes and trends, which have been overlooked by the mainstream economists and strategists, or have been mis-interpreted by them, and are too important to be ignored. Contrarian views, at least not belonging to the mainstream, prompting debate and more heated conversations are rare today when it comes to discussing Japan. With a 'boots on the ground' approach, I see my principal objectives is to help investors, who are new to the market, or navigating through the difficulties of Japan’s transforming economy, or lost have simply lost their way on Japan macro, to fully comprehend the present day aspects of money flow and the ten most important and popular themes in the market. |
